New Sony Xperia 1 VI leak details the cameras, chipset, and battery

Sony is expected to unveil the Xperia 1 VI flagship smartphone at its event on May 17. While we’ve heard a few things about it over the last few weeks, today a new rumor brings us more details, including the leaked renders you can see below.

So let’s dive in. Unsurprisingly, the Xperia 1 VI will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC. It will come with a 16mm ultrawide camera, a 24mm main camera (48mm with 2x optical zoom), and an 85-170mm telephoto zoom camera.

The zoom camera goes further than the Xperia 1 V‘s which maxed out at 125mm, but the other specs seem identical. The main camera of the Xperia 1 VI will support macro photography, and Sony will claim the image quality should rival that of its “full-size” cameras.

The big revolution will arrive in software, and after years of having multiple camera apps, this time around there will be just one new camera app, inspired by Sony’s Alpha series cameras apparently. The Xperia 1 VI will also have “human pose estimation technology” borrowed from the Alpha series, letting you pinpoint focus on subjects even when they’re facing away or have obscured faces. There’s also going to be a new Video Creator app which will simplify video production.

The Xperia 1 VI will keep the 3.5mm headphone jack around, and its speakers will apparently deliver enhanced bass and clarity. The phone has frosted textured glass on the back, and will be available in black and “platinum silver” colorways, shown below.

The display’s oft-rumored wider aspect ratio will allegedly be 19.5:9, and the OLED panel is rumored to be 1.5x brighter than that in the Xperia 1 V. The panel will have variable refresh rate too of course, ranging from 1 Hz to 120 Hz. The touch sampling rate is 240 Hz.

The battery capacity is said to be 5,000 mAh, and some upgraded battery health technology built-in seemingly extends the cell’s lifespan to four years. The phone will support wireless charging and reverse wireless charging.

In “select regions”, if you buy the Xperia 1 VI you’ll get a year of free Sony Pictures movie streaming, as well as up to five movie titles remastered with IMAX video and DTS sound, which will all be optimized for the phone.
